The vehicle
excise duty (VED) or road tax as it is more commonly known has
different rate bands depending upon the age of the vehicle. For cars
registered before 1st March 2001, there are just two bands. One for
'engines under 1549cc' and one for engines over '1549cc.'
For cars
registered on or after 1st March 2001, there are seven VED bands for
petrol and diesel vehicles and a further seven for those using
alternative fuels. Each band relates to the vehicles C02 emissions.
Each vehicle will have a rating to determine the band to which it belongs.
